It is a great pleasure and an honour to invite you to the 15th ArgoSpine Symposium on 27 and 28 January 2011 in Paris. The conference will be held at the Pullman Tour Eiffel hotel, which is located next to the Eiffel Tower and boasts a spectacular view of some of the most famous sites of Paris, the cosmopolitan city.

The main theme of the symposium is “Evidence-based spine surgery : myth or reality ?” Nowadays, the world of spine surgery has a gold standard in various fields of diagnoses and treatments. For example, “fusion surgery is the best option for the patient with degenerative spondylolisthesis” sounds like a gold standard. The lesion, however, can produce a wide range of symptoms such as : radiculopathy or cauda equina syndrome, with various grades of instability. What kind of the spondylolisthesis should be fused ? Up to now, there is no clear evidence for appropriate decision-making. We are also confronted with new concepts, techniques, or technologies year after year. It is not easy to determine whether these new clues are safe and effective compared to traditional ways. Therefore, evidence-based medicine is indispensable. The way of thinking in EBM is not about abandoning the leading academic figures of the past, but about enhancing the past through novel technologies. ArgoSpine Symposium 2011 will provide insights from EBM on the following topics : spinal osteoporosis and aging spine ; evidence-based medicine and economy ; minimally invasive surgery ; treatment for spine tumors ; countermeasures to avoid complications in spine surgery ; instrumentation in very elderly patients.

Debate being a major part of this Symposium, we are preparing Round Table Discussions as well as Interactive Case Discussions. Any rational discussion will be welcome. The aim of ArgoSpine is to promote knowledge for the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders, fostering pure and applied researches in this area. Let us work our way to better spine surgery ! Nihil semper suo statu manet.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you and look forward to seeing you at the next ArgoSpine meeting in Paris.

Kind regards,

Prof. Kazuhiro Hasegawa, Symposium President
